BLACK HISTORY MONTH - FEBRUARY 1 TO MARCH 1, 2022

Black History Month 2022

Scroll down to view our highlighted images of our BH Museum

February 1st we kick off Black History Month. During Black History Month, we commemorate, celebrate and recognize the achievements of Black Canadians from their respective communities. We also recognize their rights to equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination within Canada. Our nations are linked in so many ways, most obviously through our borders, which many African American slaves found freedom by crossing. Our shared experiences are deeply rooted, and continue today; hence, we celebrate Black History Month to shine a bright light on the struggles and the triumphs of Black Canadians and Black Americans  of African descent. We have honored notable people, past and present, who have helped shape our culture and history.

This year’s theme from
Canadian Heritage is “February and Forever”. There are many things to look forward to beyond February , and we look forward to sharing key news and details of activities and events on social media in the coming months.

Diversity and Inclusion in Sports

From January 17-18, the Carnegie Initiative, named in honor of legendary hockey player and social justice pioneer Herb Carnegie, hosted their inaugural Summit to advocate for inclusion and acceptance in the sport of hockey.

The Summit took place ahead of an important ceremony celebrating Canadian hockey legend Willie O’Ree who was
honored by the Boston Bruins when his No. 22 jersey was retired at TD Garden. Willie O'Ree became the first Black player admitted to the National Hockey League (NHL) when he debuted with the Boston Bruins on January 18, 1958.  Over his long and distinguished career, he has been an inspiration to young athletes across Canada and the U.S. To learn more about the ceremony and the Summit, click here.
